Cornerstone has membership about 70 strong with a wide age range and from a variety of social and ethnic backgrounds. We are united in having Jesus Christ as a central role model in our lives since he is an expression of God’s love for the whole of humanity and creation through his teaching and action. We each bring our own life experiences to the encounter with Jesus and welcome the diversity in understanding that naturally arises. Being a non-judgemental community there is no right or wrong merely ‘interesting’ differences in opinion and understanding.
We could blind you with Christian buzz words and esoteric theological language about our beliefs but actions speak louder than words so it all boils down to continuing Jesus original mission of seeing worth in everyone, offering a helping hand to those in need and comfort to those in distress, to the best of our abilities.
Though worship is central to the life of the church, we are also deeply embedded in the wider community. We make our hall and church buildings available to a wide range of community activities, from providing facilities for fitness and health groups to acting as polling stations and hosting hustings and councillor and local MP surgeries. In addition we host NHS clinics and blood donor sessions, Bible study days and retreats for other Christian groups, and act as an alcohol free venue hosting wedding and birthday parties (church members don't have a personal or corporate objection to alcohol, so feel free to drink before or after any event, but not on our premises, please!). Several members of Christ Church were instrumental in starting South Manchester Credit Union, and we housed their offices for several years till they outgrew the space we were able to offer. We were also instrumental in the formation of Burnage Food Bank. Recently, several of our members have been volunteering in the Transforming Lives for Good - Make Lunch Scheme, providing hot meals during school holidays and while schools are not open due to the pandemic, for families who would normally receive Free School Meals.
